Empowering people with disabilities

Do you feel lonely or disconnected from others?
Is pain from the past or worry about the future preventing you from living the life you want?
Does self-doubt keep holding you back from achieving your goals?
If any of these statements ring true for you, you’re not alone and there is hope.

At Discover Your Strengths Counselling, our goal is to empower people – especially those living with a disability – to overcome difficulties and flourish in their lives and relationships. We can all benefit from non-judgemental emotional support and guidance.

Our affordable, client-centred counselling is available in-person or via telehealth through phone or zoom, which is ideal for people restricted by a busy schedule, a remote location or mobility difficulties. We offer emotional support through professional counselling, using evidence-based strategies.

In addition, we offer a Recovery Coaching program to help you identify and achieve your goals.

About DYS Counselling

Hi, I’m Bernadette, the founder of DYS Counselling, and I’m so glad you found my page. Since becoming blind at the age of 6, I have personally faced and dealt with many difficulties. Gradually, I have discovered ways to live life in a more present, empowered and meaningful way. My personal journey inspired me to become a counsellor.

When I’m not counselling, I enjoy running, bush walking, taking my guide dog Aysha to the dog park and catching up with friends at cafes. I’m a self-confessed coffee addict and I love travelling and exploring the world.

How I can help you
I’m a PACFA registered counsellor with over 5 years experience supporting people suffering from depression, anxiety, loneliness, grief and low self-esteem. I love working with people and helping them to discover their strengths, find their passions and remove barriers that are keeping them from living a fulfilling life.

It takes time and hard work, but I truly believe everyone can make positive changes to improve their life. I would love to help you make that happen.

I love to listen to your story and help you to gain new insights. I will provide you with strategies and tools as needed. My clients often report that I make them feel safe, supported and deeply heard. My style is person-centred, as I believe that you are the expert of your own life.

I use a range of evidenced-based, therapeutic techniques, including:

Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT focuses on helping you to live more in the present, disengage from painful thoughts and feelings and take action to enhance your life.

Strategies include mindfulness techniques, value clarification and goal setting.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):

CBT helps you to recognize and change destructive thought patterns that negatively impact your behaviour and emotions.

In CBT, we work together to challenge these negative thoughts and replace them with more realistic and helpful ones.

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

SFT recognises that you already have the strengths and resources to solve your problems.

It is a future-orientated approach that centres around creating realistic and practical solutions.

At DYS Counselling, we offer affordable, client-centred Counselling and Recovery Coaching – both services delivered in-person, over the phone or through zoom, for $80 per 1-hour session.

A preliminary 15 minute consultation is available for free.

Recovery Coaching is a funded support available through the NDIS, for people with a psychosocial disability.

It involves:

  • working with you to identify and achieve your goals;
  • helping you to understand your NDIS plan and how to get the most out of it;
  • assisting you to access services and supports that best meet your needs.
